Starting on Wednesday, February 20th, a new waste system for the School was implemented

Consisting of a recycling bin, garbage bin, and compost bin, two of these sorting stations were placed in the cafeteria in an effort to gradually ease students into changing their habits respecting waste.

By February 25th, a total of 10 of these sorting stations will be placed in various areas around the school.

Kicking off with a fun game and presentation, students from grades 8 through 12 were exposed to the new changes on Friday with an assembly at the LEC where students learned what items go in which bin.

For example, paper and bottles are placed in the recycling bin, wrappers in the garbage bin, and any food scraps or napkins touching food in the green compost bin.

In order to engage everyone, the SWAG team, in conjunction with the administrators and staff,

put together a video called “compost style” which describes how to use these bins in a    captivating music video.

“We’re really excited to introduce this new system to the school,” one representative said. “We saw that the School had so much potential for reducing waste and reducing our environmental impact, and when the Township of Langley offered to work with us to provide us with the stations, we were really excited!”

The representative also explained how they had worked on bringing this project to fruition for a long time, and were excited to see their ideas come to life.

The aim of the project is to reduce the waste produced in the school in the short term, while teaching students to build life-long positive
