On Friday, September 21st, the new grade 8 classes of R.E Mountain Secondary School had the opportunity to participate in one of the school’s greatest traditions -- the Grade 8 Survivor Day! This was a special privilege extended to all the newly arriving grade eight students at R.E. Mountain.

It was a day filled with fun events and games that brought out the competitive spirit in all the students (and teachers!).

The big day started at Derby Reach, with students making their very own creative team flags and cheers. Everyone was given time and a bottle of paint to create an original team name, cheers, and flags.

Lots of students painted their faces with the paint of their team color to show team spirit.

Some creative names were made such as “Icebergs”, “Hospital,” and even “Narwhals”!

Then we were off to the tug of war games! Through several rounds, the toughest team was chosen and awarded multiple points.

When it came time for the teachers to compete against the student council leaders, the success of the teachers over the students was inevitable. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and, as a result, had a lot of fun. Tug-of-war is sure to be a Mountain tradition at future events.

The games of sponge and bucket and relays came next. Students showed off their talents, whether they were athletic or great at spelling. Points were accumulated from each event, and the team with the most points was rewarded with candies!

The games were intended for, and were successful at, teaching the students about the importance of teamwork and leadership when striving for a common goal.

Overall, the Grade 8 Survivor Day proved to be a worthwhile experience for all those involved. Although the weather was not the best, the bright and enthusiastic personalities of all the teachers and leaders, as well as the grade 8 students, helped light some sunshine for the day.

On behalf of everyone from student council who helped make the event a great success, as well as the amazing teachers who helped out, we hope that the new grade 8 students had a wonderful day and felt welcomed by this unique experience!
