Miley Cyrus: The Reinvention (By: Katie Downie)

When I was younger, I watched Hannah Montana whenever I got a chance. She had this really great energy and charisma that made you like her and want to be her best friend. When I got a bit older, and Hannah Montana became a bit too “young” for me, I decided to watch her new movies and listened to her new music, especially “Party in the U.S.A.” Now, Miley has really changed, trying to get out of that Disney Channel girl, and into a more adult and provocative image.

Cyrus’s new album “Bangerz” (which is expected to drop on Oct. 8th) is to be her “first real album” according to an interview with Billboard magazine in June. When asked what to expect from the album, Cyrus commented that it has "a more urban side," with "country-rock influences." She also made it clear this is not a hip-hop album, just straight pop. With her chart toppers of “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” the album is expected to be a huge hit.

Cyrus’s music videos on her Vevo channel became a huge hit, breaking records on YouTube. “We Can’t Stop” received ten million views within twenty-four hours of its release, and later broke the website's record for being the fastest video to reach 100 million views, which took thirty-seven days. It currently has 203,677,975 views since June 19th. On September 9th, Cyrus dropped her video for her 2nd hit single “Wrecking Ball”. The video broke another YouTube record on getting 19.3 million within 24 hours of the release. It now currently holds 133,670,266 views.

Her famous performance at the MTV VMAs in August has people still buzzing about it. Many celebrities, like Cher and Pink are not impressed with the performance. In a recent interview with E! Online, Pink said "Am I into it? No, I think it's tacky,” when asked about the performance. Cher said in an interview with USA Today that the star’s performance was “so bad.” There are some stars that are defending Cyrus. Britney Spears is one of them, telling critics to stop slamming her.

Students around our school have lots to say about Miley. One student commented that they think she has “changed in a bad way.” Another noted that they “used to like her before her haircut and change of style of music.”
