Remembrance Day Assembly (By: Mark Zhang)

Our school’s tribute to the brave soldiers who fought in past wars was held on November 8th in the (I forgot what room it was) room. Multiple sessions of the assembly were held that day one after another in order to accommodate everyone at REMSS, as the room was not large enough to hold all the students at once. Expectations were the same as with past Remembrance Day assemblies, and everyone showed their respect by not talking, clapping, or using electronic devices throughout the entire session.

During the assembly, several presentations were made to honor all those who died to protect our country, followed by a moment of silence set aside to remember them. Some students told stories of their relatives who went to war, and the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” was recited. There was a PowerPoint presentation, slide showing soldiers in wars throughout time and all over the world with music that was more modern than the usual Remembrance day music and yet somehow still fitting.

A few emotional monologues were recited that perfectly captured the feeling one would get from losing a loved one to war. A heartbreaking skit was also played out that showed audiences the bravery of our soldiers, the indiscriminate brutality of war that they had to face, and the sadness of losing someone close to you.

The assembly helped many people of our generation, most of whom have not been emotionally affected by war in any way, realise how others not fortunate enough to be unscarred by war must feel, and also the great sacrifices made by soldiers past and present to keep our country safe.
