Shooting shakes residents at Sandy Hook Elementary

On December 14 a great tragedy took place at Sandy Hook Elementary school where a gun man shot 26 first graders and staff.  There is a debate on whether students and staff should return or the areas of the school should be renovated. On January 18 at Newtown high school there will be a hearing on the schools fate.  Some people believe that the school should be torn down.  There is a lot of controverting issues on this topic as people have very strong opinions about this issue. A kindergarten teacher saved her students by hiding them in cupboards and telling the gun man that they were at gym class; she was shot but she saved the lives of these young ones. Lives were taken that day and some are still having trouble to this day, trying to forget the issue. Some say they will not even drive by the school as it brings up awful memories. New guns laws have been imposed in New York as they are the toughest in the nation. The gun man used a semiautomatic rifle and the sale has been prohibited; owners have a year to register their weapons with police. New York is also the first state which requires background checks and a more comprehensive data place is enacted for people owning guns. Mental health professionals will be required to tell authorities if someone is not in the right state of mind to own such weapons. The National Rifle Association has stated, “These gun control schemes have failed in the past and they will have no impact”. Let’s hope for the best as our best wishes and prayers are with them and make this New Year an easy one for the families of these victims.
