As you all are probably aware World Food Day was celebrated by many schools in our community, including our own at the Langley Events Center on October 16, 2012. It was organized by the Food For Famine Society and its founder Maria Martini who has been working full time since the first week of January in order to organize this massive event. On October 16, 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was found. Every year since then, World Food Day has been celebrated on October 16 in order to honor this day. Many organizations gather together on this day to raise awareness about various topics related to food security, poverty and hunger. Every year there is a new theme for World Food Day. This year the theme was, “Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world". Many of the organizations that participated in this event were: MANA Nutrition, World Vision Canada, Hope International Development Agency and Breakfast Clubs of Canada. Representatives including Mark Moore, Michael Messenger, David McKenzie and Daniel German came from all these various organizations and talked about the different causes they support as well as how everyone can do a little something to make a difference in the world. Furthermore, there were displays organized by different organizations as well as groups from the various schools, giving students a plethora of information about various organizations and issues. World Food Day was a great success and hopefully students along with the teachers left World Food Day inspired. “Make a difference in the world! Be the change, share the bounty!”
